Stellar Winery received a gold medal at the 2018 Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show for their Woolworths Organic No Sulphur Added Shiraz. The award ceremony took place on Tuesday 29 May at the Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel in Cape Town. Klaas Coetzee, head winemaker at Stellar Winery, was there to receive this prestigious award on behalf of the whole Stellar Winery team.

“The Stellar Winery family would like to thank our winemakers and our team at the cellar. We are proud of everything we have achieved and we are grateful for the organisers and the judges for giving recognition to our wine,” says Willem Rossouw, managing director of Stellar Winery.

Stellar Organics No Sulphur Added Organic Shiraz won gold medals in 2018 and 2016 for the 2017 and 2015 vintages respectively. This year the winning wines were selected from a line-up of 977 wine entries judged ‘blind’ (labels unseen) by a panel chaired by South African wine authority Michael Fridjhon. All judges are esteemed international and local wine personalities. Shiraz was the largest class with 106 submissions.

“Overall the wines are much better, much purer, much cleaner, more linear and now, all of a sudden, the judges have an opportunity when they’re looking at their top silvers and their golds to look for real personality, real nuance, real detail. It’s not just about a well-made wine that gets there by default. It is that some of the really finest wines have expressed themselves in a way we weren’t expecting to find five or ten years ago,” said Michael Fridjhon, chairman of the judges at the feedback session on 3 May 2018.

“We are proud to shine a spotlight on South Africa’s best wines through the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show,” says Thobile Tshabalala, Head of Brand at Old Mutual Emerging Markets.

Local wine lovers are invited to the 2018 public tasting where there will be 171 wines presented: all are silver, gold or trophy medal winners that have excelled at the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show competition. There will be two public tastings, one in Cape Town at the CTICC on Wednesday 13 June, and one in Johannesburg at the Sandton Convention Centre on Friday 15 June.
